Um...where's the entrance?

Nestled in Miami's up-and-coming Wynwood neighborhood on 34th and N. Miami Ave, there is no fancy entrance or line around the block or any real big bruhaha extravaganza letting you know you've arrived at an awesome location. Instead, look for the "red awning" in the alley, knock on the door and in you go to Miami's newest hot spot - Bardot.

Last night StrictlyMIA and I had a chance to venture over to the grand opening of this new lounge filled with plush couches, a pool table, pinball machines and the type of decorative items you find at a thrift store and think, "where can I put that?" The vibe was chill (the manager walks around in a kimono with burning incense and jams on the drums with patrons), the drinks cheap (had 6 AWESOME, quality beers, tab $30), and the music...well, it was spectacular (no Party in the USA by Miley...THANK GOD). Oh...and I forgot to mention, opening night included an appearance by designer Richie Rich and resulted in some random getting naked for a free trip to LA. Gotta love Miami. Overall - my new fave place. Enough said.

Check it out:

It's all fun and games...

Until I get stuck in traffic on the Biscayne parking lot for an hour! I'm literally sitting at home, afraid to venture out again. Today was Miami's Carnival on 2nd ave. Very fun festivities and lively music going on...but for the love of god, I wish they would've planned for some better traffic control! Please take note, City of Miami, you have to do better next time!

Here's a peek of the what when down courtesy of the Miami Herald:

The Big Bounce

My friends and I went to The Shore Club last night to kick back after a hectic work day. While we were there, we encountered a local band, The Big Bounce. They've been pretty big on the local music scene for a while so I'm sure this is old news to most you.

Composed of Brendan O'Hara & Komakozie (amazing beatbox!) , they were filled so much with good energy and sound. They played the kind of music that any crowd could enjoy, trust us.

You can find The Big Bounce at the Florida Room at the Delano on Tuesdays starting at 10:00 pm.

Nourish your beer gut

Do you have a love for beer, yet fear exposing your beer belly at backyard and pool shenanigans this weekend? Well, given the rain forecast for this weekend you're in luck! Indulge in some good 'ole beer drinking instead and check out the Miami Herald's guide to local breweries that serve the finest ale from around the world. Yet, fear not, for those who want to keep things patriotic...you'll find many options from around the USA (um...a Frisco Sierra Nevada sounds good right about now). Their recos include The Bar in the Gables; The Abbey Brewing Co, The Room & Zeke's on the Beach; Gordon Biersch in Brickell; and The Titanic Brewery in South Miami (click here for more details).

Do you have any other fav breweries? Let us know!

Miami Makes You Sweat...As If You Didn't Already Know!

As part of our Wednesday "Seriously, WTF!" rant we decided to share this with you:

Old Spice has named Miami as the #7 " Sweatiest City of All Time". Now I know this isn't really a rant because living in or having been to Miami in the middle of summer, you can agree with Old Spice's claim but the Seriously, WTF factor is why the hell weren't we #2 (at least, because we recognize that Phoenix, which is #1, is in the middle of a desert).

Other Florida cities to grace the list are:
  • West Palm Beach
  • Tampa
  • Orlando
  • Fort Myers

Another fun fact: According to Old Spice, all 5 Florida cities collectively produce nearly 2 millions gallons of sweat-enough to fill Shamu's tank in about 3.25 hours.....seriously, wtf?

You can read the rest of the release here.

Fireworks!

Is it only us or has this year flown by? I remember (what I can remember from that night) celebrating New Year's and now it's time to celebrate Fourth of July! Since the economy blows, some fireworks displays aren't happening this year (The Biltmore...cough, cough) so we wanted to share with you some old and new fireworks displays. We came across this great guide put together by miami.com that should help you and your family this Fourth of July holiday.

Click here to view the guide.

We also heard about a new Fireworks Display/Pool Party happening at the Viceroy Hotel-Icon Brickell that sounds like a winner. Festivities begin at noon and go well into the night but you must RSVP here to get in.

We will try to keep you updated throughout the week with more display shows and pool parties. In the meantime, send us some suggestions.

Best of Miami

Miami New Times' Best of Miami 2009 is out online!

Click here to find out who the winners are. Congrats to all!

Bend it like Beckham in Brickell

Miami's Brickell area is fast becoming an urban-dwellers mecca with everything you need right around the corner:
  • Out of milk? Publix is two blocks from your apt.
  • Craving Mexican? If its pay-day, you have the option of Rosa....if it's not, you can go to Baja Fresh.
  • Bad day at work? sigh, Tobacco Road to the rescue.
  • Want to get in a good game of soccer at a state-of-the art facility? Um...wait, can you? Well, yes and like everything else in Brickell, in style! Miami's up and coming urban scene downtown now includes a rooftop soccer field...yes, I said rooftop.
Here's a re-post regarding Brickell Soccer Rooftop from our friends at ThrillList Miami:

Soccer Rooftop
444 Brickell Ave, Brickell; 786.220.4589

Rooftops offer awesomeness: killer parties, a sweet view of topless sunbathing chicks foolish enough to think you're not watching, and sweeter views of the cops pulling up right after you realize she's not as foolish as you thought. Adding the world's game to the list, Soccer Rooftop.

Run by three amigos from Latin America, one of whom played for Mexico in the World Cup, SR's a pair of fenced-in soccer pitches on the mid-level roof of the Rivergate Plaza in Brickell, complete with an indoor lounge and patio, and accommodating adult league play, or anything else you can think up, from corporate events, to birthdays, to wedding receptions for any marriages you desperately want to fail. Fields're standard size for indoor futbol (56'x110'), and're covered in two-tone green artificial turf that meets the highest FIFA rating, thanks to sand and small rubber granules that keep turf blades upright, lending a more earthy feel to the pitch; the standard indoor balls used are less likely to shoot off the roof, as they're smaller and harder -- cruel, but the alternative is them falling to their death. As for games, SR'll throw your squad in a league, let you create an entire league of your own, or put you on a solo waiting list so you can jump in for teams missing a guy or two; games'll kick off any time from midday, to post-work, to 1am for a diehard cadre of valet drivers, cooks, and waiters -- get in, and they'll exercise frustration at your adeptness at calculating 14%. There's full men's and women's locker rooms w/ showers (and a sauna in the men's), a lounge area with free wi-fi, hardwood floors, an L-shaped sofa, plenty of cushy chairs, a flatscreen hi-def for watching professional matches, and an outdoor patio area, where you'll be tempted to go topless, until an onlooker reports the outrage to the cops. See how the balls bounce at SoccerRooftop.com

Bancroft SUPERclub

Time and time again we are all faced with the question, " What is there to do tonight?". It's not that there isn't millions of things to do, its the simple fact that we forget what's around (especially when under pressure). We came across a new nightlife supercenter/bar/restaurant (it's an all-in-one package) today that we hope you remember for next time's question.

The Bancroft Supperclub, opening today in Miami Beach, houses several bars, a restaurant, and outside lounges. This might be the end of your bar-hopping days.

Ms. Vaselina and I will be making a trip over to the beach this weekend to check it out. We encourage you to do the same and let us know what you thought about it.

Rain Delay on Life?

We are at day 21 of rain in what's supposed to be beautiful, sunny Miami. Wet streets and random street canals make it impossible to get anywhere or even make you want to go anywhere. Basically, this "much needed" rain has really turned out to be a major buzz kill. AND, to top it all off...June marks the beginning of mine and strictlyMIA's birthday month...how are we supposed to plan for fab b-day bashes when there seems to be no end in sight to this rain?!?!?

Well, my friends, we'll have to resort to plan B. Aside from catching up on some zZzZz's, here are some indoor activities that don't require any drive time:
  • Get to know your neighbors: invite the rude guy from the elevator, and anyone else in your building you don't know over for happy hour. Play a rain-inspired drinking game such as taking a shot every time it thunders or lighting strikes...you'll be drunk in 10 minutes.
  • Couch potato it up: stock up on movies from Blockbuster....On-demand/Comcast can't be trusted.
  • Be a kid again: go to Toys R' Us and buy some board games! Some of my faves are Mad Gab, Taboo and Cranium. Also, stay active and play some Wii...you could even have a Wii party. WAIT...better yet, play some old school charades. Whatever game you chose, please remember that alcohol is a requirement.
  • Snuggle. I do not recommend doing this by yourself as that will just add to your rain-induced depression.
  • Lights out: grab a good book and flashlight. I approve of doing by yourself.
  • Summer cleaning?? Start a new cleaning tradition...I mean, why not?
  • Pop a squat: that is, in a bar. Head out early to good spot like Transit where there is usually a band or two to help you shake your caboose, a variety of games to play (darts, pool, connect four to name a few) and a full bar. A spot like this eliminates the need to bar-hop in the rain.

While the above are good options for a casual weekend, the b-day bash dilemma still weighs upon us so we need your help! Aside from praying to a higher being for clear skies, got any ideas for any fun, b-day extravagances to help us rebel against the rain?? Please do tell....

Oh...and I almost forgot...HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

Thursday, June 4

What are we doing today, Brain?

Well...I'm not Pinky...so obviously not taking over the world. But, if you're on a diet like myself (and every other girl in the MIA...including those that are ALREADY skinny...but like to talk about how pudgy they are)....then trying to have fun while sidelining some calories can seem just as daunting.

No need to worry, Level 25's Skinny Thursdays are here to save the day! According to our friends at DailyCandy, the happy hour festivity offers drinks and snacks under 200 calories (um...almost sounds like the 100 calories packs...but better!), including $7 cocktails like the Skim Rose (Belvedere vodka, fresh cranberry juice, Moët & Chandon, Imperial, and fresh raspberries). So cheap drinks and eats that won't necessarily cancel out calories burned at boxing? Sigh...I've died and gone to a broke, dieters alcohol heaven.

But, WAIT! If you're not worried about the calories, but still want to drink on the cheap while supporting some sort of theme or inner desire, then be sure to check out Level 25's other weekly happy hour offerings, which are part of the bar's "Elevate Your Week" happy hour series. Here's a quick rundown:

  • Mojito Monday's: $6 Mojitos, Caipirinhas and Caprioskas to help you say goodbye to the Monday blues!
  • Go Green Tuesdays: organic wines and Go Green menu to help chic, tree-huggers sip in style.
  • Wine'Down Wednesdays: 50 percent off all glasses/bottles of wine and champagnes AND $5 glasses of wine...um, yeah, perfect for the winos!
  • Skinny Thursdays: you know all the deets.
  • Elevated Fridays: 50 percent off the entire wine, champagne and cocktail menu....plus, fab music to help you start the weekend all sauced up by 7:30 PM.
So, there you have it. A full week of great happy hour offerings from 5 - 8 PM. God bless this place!

Location: Level 25 at the Conrad Hotel

Quads are making a comeback!

So, I was driving down NE 2nd avenue in Wynwood yesterday and passed by a Dominoes pizza. Apparently, I missed the memo because that location is now a skate up joint. Waiting at the counter there was a girl (totally done up with make-up and all) waiting for her pizza in old school quad skates that looked like they were circa 1986 (I think I had might have had the same pair).

EVERYONE has in bike in my neighbor...but seriously, WTF, now we're pulling out the quads?? Yea...I think that's pretty awesome.

Are quads be making a comeback? What do you think??

Miami's best band? duh, ArtOfficial!

The Miami New Times is launching its annual "Best of Miami" survey and needs your votes! This local tradition highlights the best of the best in the city and I personally always look forward to it. From new eateries to local music venues to the best boutiques and the best new bands, the "Best of Miami" always brings us Miami's hidden treasures.

In particular, this year, I think you should vote for ArtOfficial in the best band category. Here's my shameless, yet totally derserving plug:
  • Have you ever been to one of their shows and seen people NOT dancing? Yea, that never happens...they always know how to bring it and personally, I always leave a show one hot mess...which is what you want from a good night out. Plus, they have their own "Dancing Queen" front and center at every show.

  • There's no perfect way to describe their sound because they're just 'Too Nasty'....seriously, think about the sickest rapper you know from the golden era of hip-hop, jamming with a classic jazz band....luckily you don't have to think about it, because it exists. ArtOfficial is basically a match made in heaven...and anything that comes heaven must be good.

  • Their sax guy, Keith, will likely spontaneously combust on stage one day...it doesn't get any cooler than that.

  • They won't ban you from their shows if you act a fool and sing into their mics while they're trying to record live...they'll just turn them off and welcome back you back with open arms.

  • The just won a Grammy! Well, almost...more like the Grammy Florida showcase, which is still the coolest thing and one step closer. They also made it as finalists to play at Lollapalooza. They've released an album in Japan. They were part of the line-up to re-open South Beach's iconic Clevelander Hotel. They have multiple weekly shows at some of Miami's best venues. Yet, despite all their success and the number of good things that continue to happen for them...they're still just a bunch of guys passionate about what they do and make sure they work hard to do it...and that's why it works.

So, basically, they simply just rock! It's hard to find genuine goodness like this in Miami, even if you tried. Trust me on this. So go on and vote now!!

Hello, Hello...strictlyMIA...you there?!?!?

Yes, we're alive! There really is no excuse for our lapse in posting...or is there? Actually, the thing is, I just got a puppy and she peed on my laptop...so as you can imagine, it has been hard to connect to bring you the latest and greatest about anything and everything Miami. Do you forgive us?

Well...if I'm begging forgiveness, I should tell you the truth (especially since I haven't really actually gotten my puppy yet)...we've simply fallen off the map...have been slacking off...lost our focus...but behind every slacker there is always an excuse, so here are some of ours:
  1. Travelin' - I went on vacay a month ago...and while I physically checked-out and came back, I hadn't really mentally checked-in. Luckily, I just survived a 50-hour work week...so my brain has re-activated itself from "slacker, do just enough to get by" mode to "get shit done, while burning the midnight oil" mode. In addition to my fun in the sun, I also had some business travel in between. All the air travel sent my funny, witty brain chip into hibernation...I'm not sure if it is fully awake yet, but hopefully the rustiness will wear off in the next few posts.

  2. Celebratin'- strictlyMIA graduated!!! So, she took some time to mentally decompress...after all the shize she went through at F-I-U...I don't blame her. CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Workin' - After graduation, StrictlyMIA started the "real world." Meaning goodbye Friday mani/pedi at noon, hello 9 to 5, baby! Some growing pains are in order.

  4. Couch Potato-in' (kinda) - Blame it on the a a a a a alcohol...well, not really...more like the TV...I got sucked into Grey's, Lost, the NBA Playoffs...which all did include some alcohol-happy (or miserable if we're talking about the Heat's elimination) viewing parties. Plus, I'm broke...so TV and Robert Mondavi's Pinot Noir (only the $9, private collection) have become my new BFFs.

But, there's no need to fear! I just got my tax return check, bought some new red shoes, and found some new inspiration...so, I'm happy to say we're back business!!!

P.S. do you have any lame excuses for laziness?? Please do share...my excuse well is running dry and I'm sure I'll need something at one point or another (of course, not for the blog =).

It's All About Me

After long hectic hours at the office and almost growing a hunchback from sitting at your desk all day in front of a computer screen… we all need a ME Day! And what better way than at Me Day Spa. We recently visited this cozy bungalow-like spa that is tucked away on Alton Road. They have all the trendy comforts of the modern day spa from a hair salon, mani and pedi stations, three facial rooms and amazing massages. They even have a special carotene treatment for your hair and mango facial peels (sounds yummy).

Their staff is really friendly and while you’re getting pampered you even get treated to a glass of champagne..it doesn’t get any better than that now does it! You can check them out at http://www.medayspa.com/.

Liar Liar...Wednesday Rant

One of our strictlyMIA fans (one of the five of you) sent us this picture and we just had to post it up. I understand that we live in a predominant Hispanic culture but seriously, wtf?

If anyone dares to try these or has tried them before, please let us know.

Attention Fashionistas: Classy, Landfill Chic Now Available

Remember the days when you would open your lunchbox and found an oh-so-tasty Capri Sun pouch next to your pan con bistec? (yes, my mom loved me!) Since then, I've been hooked on the goodness of the juice and many times stocked my mini-dorm room pantry with the pouches...after all, they were excellent mixers for my mocktails! But after all the joy they've brought to your life, the pouch was always destined to a grimy and non-environmentally conducive future in a landfill.

Well...not anymore! Capri Sun, in partnership with TerraCycle (an eco-company that has pioneered the concept that any disposable material can be reused and created into something of value) have teamed up in an effort to make the classic pouch a hot-item accessory for budding fashionistas!

Recently, the companies hosted a CAPRI SUN Ready to Re-Wear Runway Show hosted by teen sensation AnnaSophia Robb (Disney's Race to Witch Mountain). The best part of the event was a one-of-a-kind dress made entirely from Capri Sun pouches (modeled by 12-year-old Chantellyne Rivera of Miami, a member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade). The dress is currently being auctioned off to benefit The Boys & Girls Club of America.

Visit http://www.ebaygivingworks.com/ and type in Capri Sun to bid on the dress!

Miami - Vote Earth!

It started in 2006...U.S. citizens started to get enthusiastic about our electoral process...more so than ever before. The result: Change. When it comes to historic elections, its safe to say our generation has become part of something that's bigger than us. Now, we have the opportunity to once again take part in an "election" that can impact our way of living on a global level by making the decision to Vote Earth.

How to cast your ballot: tomorrow night at 8:30 PM by turn off your light switch for 1-hour to celebrate Earth Hour.

The goal: One billion people voting with their light switch during Earth Hour to create a powerful mandate for our leaders to take strong and decisive action on climate change during the Dec. 2009 meeting in Copenhagen.

um...I'm late

Thankfully these words apply to our weekly Wednesday rant. For today, let's say we had a little birdie come sing us a song...about chongas that is.

Local producer KC Chopz paid tribute to the chongas (ala Puffy using the beats from Asher Roth's "I Love College) complete with a shout to to bistec empanizado. While funny, this geniusness is pretty much recycled. I mean, has everyone forgotton our "Chongalicious" girls?

Seriously, WTF? There's no way he's better than our home girls....we're on "Team Chongalicious."

Cheap drinks till 2 AM and not at a Dive Bar? Tell me more...

Forget the smokey bar scene, this week's best "hump day" happy hour is happening at the River Lounge. Located at the Epic Hotel in Brickell, the new lounge will be hosting a soft-opening on Wednesday, March 25th from 4 PM to 2 AM with discounted drinks for those that RSVP to the event.

This newcomer to the Miami happy hour/nightlife scene promises to be Miami chic with its towering windows and schnazzy décor (including a circular bar, balcony, and cozy spots). Oh, and wait…a patio allowing us to brave the humidity for romantic, wind-blowing in your hair dates or the oh-so-sexy (or not-so-sexy) smoke. Offering both classy and adventurous drinks as well as yummy delicacies with a bar menu from restaurant Area 31, we think River Lounge is on its way to becoming the next “it” place. Sigh...a new place with a nice ambiance.

Plus, with cheap drinks running till 2 AM (FYI a ploy to lure us….which works), those cozy spots seem just right for a drunken make-out session for those whose happy hours end up being more than just an hour. Here's to a happy hump day!

Some details
Address: Epic Hotel, 270 Biscayne Blvd. Way
Date: March 25th
Time: 4 PM to 2 AM

An Event Short

This event doesn't need an explanation....all you need to know is that wine will be involved.

A Seafood Affair

I've been slacking on my end of the posts this week but luckily we have Ms. Vaselina to keep us entertained. However, I'm back (please hold your excitement) and I have a new, low-key, cheap event for your family next SUNDAY funday.

The Deering Estate is hosting thier 5th Annual Deering Seafood Festival on the Bay. The festival features live music, art exhibits, the Lil Shrimp Kids Zone, boat rides, and tours of the historical Deering Estate and more.

Our favorite part because we love eat is the fact that there will be live cooking demos from local chefs representing these fab restaurants:

  • Oceanaire
  • Ortanique on the Mile
  • Bizcaya (Ritz-Carlton)
Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children over the age of 4.

Click HERE for more info on the event and the types of seafood that will be served.

Wednesday "handcuffs edition" Rant

I once went out on a date with a guy that ended up being disastrous (not TOO disastrous, just really, REALLY not my type). The first sign should have been when he pulled up in his car, and on the rear view mirror there were handcuffs hanging.

Nope, he wasn't a cop in case you were wondering. He's part of that weird breed of Miami people that think that is somewhat cool.

I would have accepted over sized fluffy dice, but handcuffs? Seriously, WTF.

What tickles your pickle?

Hopefully, it’s the grand opening of The Electric Pickle in Wynwood (former Circa 28 digs). The new bar/lounge is throwing a “sneak-peak” party on Wednesday, March 18th to help those of us who have missed Circa 28 fill the void in our hearts for place that has a chill vibe, a thriving local music/arts scene, and most importantly, no cover to enter!

The party kicks off at 9 PM and will feature some of Miami’s best live bands such as ArtOfficial and The Jesse Jackson Band, DJ sets by Will Renuart and Captain Ridiculous as well as surprise guests.

Bottom line: be there or be square.

Address: 2826 North Miami Ave.

Sunday Funday

On any given Friday, probably 75% of my friends status updates are as follows: "TGIF...woo-hoo!!" At 5:59 PM, we all act like captive animals cut loose for the first time running ravenously toward our weekend...or happy hour (you say tomato, I say tomAto). Following a rambunctious Friday, we sleep in late and wake up to either shop or go to the beach and basically, do it all over again. After all, weekends are made for fun.

By the time Sundays roll around, you're spent. However, you could still have low-key fun. Here are some of my favorite, low-effort Sunday activities (aka no make-up or perfectly coiffed hair required) that are sure to help you make the most of your laziness:
  • Movies: Sundays are perfect for catching up on the latest flicks...while in bed. Hit up Blockbluster....or better yet, sign up for Netflix and have the movies delivered right to you.
  • Brunch: meet up friends and get wasted early at brunch. The key is to find a place with bottomless Mimosas.
  • Lounge: lay out by the pool with a magazine or book...and a nice cold corona. Invite some friends over (but keep it at a minimum, you don't want a party!) and spend the day talking shit.
  • Relax: take a super hot, 2-hour bubble bath then slip back into your jammies (please make sure they're clean ones).
  • Sleep: nap it up! I usually like to get up and take a little nap on the couch....head to the sala for another one, then make it back to my bed.

Lazy Sundays are so fun, I suggest doing Sunday on Saturday.

St. Patty's in Miami

This year's St. Patty's Day should be like all of the other ones: green and full of alcohol resulting in uselessness at work the next day.

strictlyMIA has put together a list of suggestions for you on your quest for a good time this March 17th. In the end, we know that when you're with the right people you'll have fun no matter where you go.

Our Top Pick:

Although we are big fans of John Martin's annual St. Patrick's Day Festival in the Gables, its time to move on. This year we are trying something different and heading out to Irish Times' block party in South Miami starting at 6 pm.

Irish Times: 5350 Sunset Dr.

Other Suggestions:

  • John Martin's: 253 Miracle Mile
  • Duffy's Tavern: 2108 SW 57 Ave.
  • The Playwright: 1265 Washington Ave.
  • Waxy O' Connors: 1248 Washington Ave.
  • Churchills: 5501 NE 2nd Ave.
